Staff Review of Northview (Ridge Course) April 26/04
LowerScoreGolf staff rates this course #4 in British Columbia

If you have never played on a PGA Tour golf course, you can right here in the Vancouver area. I was surprised at how well they have maintained the Northview Ridge Course since the Air Canada Championship was chopped from the tour two years ago.

The fairways are as as lush as I have ever seen in April on the west coast, and the greens are as true and consistent as any I have played on in recent years. I was shocked to see putts rolling in from 15 feet with regularity, as putting is my achilles heel.

They have also upgraded some esthetics that make it a visually beautiful course as well. The front nine is probably my favorite nine in the province. The first three holes challenge you to be accurate off the tee and judge your distance, as these holes are hilly, but fair and not at all gimmicky.

The two par fives on the front nine are fantastic and unique. Both providing the risk-reward that better players can appreciate. Number seven is one of my top three par fives on the entire west coast.

You don't want the front nine to end because it is so peaceful and beautiful. The back nine goes down into a less attractive flat land, but the holes remain unique. My favorite thing about this course is that you can look forward to every hole being different. While the front nine has great par fives, the back nine has two of the best par threes around. Number 16 is probably one of the best mid-length par 3s in the province especially when the pressure is on toward the end of the round. You simply cannot put the tee shot in the wrong place or par is very difficult. The elevated tee and wind add to the challenge. But 11 is the one I love. This is the best short par three in the lower mainland. It looks innocent enough, but I dare you to not bail out to the right when the pin is on the left side of the green.

If you followed the players at the tour event you can appreciate how difficult the closing three holes are when the pressure is on. Many of them couldn't clear the water to the green on 18, give it a shot yourself with a few bucks on the line. I was two under after fifteen and finished two over with only the pressure my own mind trying to break par.

Combine all of this with unsurpassed practice facilities, a great proshop, and beautiful clubhouse, and Northview is our pick for the overall top public golf facility in the Vancouver area.

Rating:

Visual Appeal: 4.6 out of 5 (front nine is a five)

Challenge Level: 5 out of 5

Course Conditioning: 5 out of 5

Service: 5 out of 5

Total: 19.6 out of 20

We rank this golf course fourth in the province and second in western B.C.
