Last Week on the tours:

After the front nine of the Skin's Game this weekend Annika Sorenstam was ahead of Fred Couples, Mark O'Meara, and Phil Mickelson, thanks to one of the greatest shots in Skin's Game history. She holed a 45 yard bunker shot to get four skins. She then came out on Sunday and won the first skin of the day. Thanks to Couples making some long bomb putts, including one on the fourth playoff hole, he ended up walked away with a resounding victory and $605,000.

Annika finished second, Mickelson third, and defending champion Mark O'Meara couldn't make a putt and was shut out.

In other news Tiger Woods announced his engagement to his Swedish girlfriend of two years. He popped the question to Elin Nordegren in South Africa this week, according to a Swedish newspaper. Apparently Woods proposed on a trail at sunset in a game reserve. Nordgren was Jesper Parnevik's nanny when Tiger met her two years ago.

The final stage of the PGA Tour Q-School begins this week at Orange County National in Florida.

A star studded field at the Sunshine Tour's Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa, saw Sergio Garcia edge Retief Goosen in a playoff. Other notables in the field were Kenny Perry, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Darren Clarke, and Nick Price amoung others.

Quote/Joke of the week:

Golfer: Caddie, will you please stop looking at your watch all the time? It's very distracting.

Caddie: It's not my watch, sir. It's my compass.

- Fred Metcalf

Tip of the week:

Computer/Video practice:

Quite by accident a few years ago, I started playing golf on my computer. I used both "Tiger Woods Golf" and "Links". What I found was that these new games actually replicate a round of golf quite well.

If you use the three click swing with your mouse, you can actually work on your tempo. The more I studied, the more I realized that the same flaws in a person's swing tempo on the course, tend to be replicated on the computer mouse. You could see the people who took the club back too fast, and the people who "hit" at the ball and came down to quickly.

In addition to timing, these games can help you with patience, course management, and especially concentration. You can set it up to be competitive and build pressure into it.

The one key is to set your distances the same as you would on the course for real. In other words, if you hit your driver 240 yards, don't use the driver on the video game, use the club that will hit it 240 maximaum. Same with the other clubs. Make it as realistic as possible.

People laugh at me about this, but give it a try. It will help your mental and strategic game if nothing else.

Golf equipment and training aids:

  • The best golf equipment does not have to break the bank. I use clone golf clubs from Pinemeadow Golf, and I have used many name brands. Custom clubs that fit your game is the way to go. Gift certificates are a great idea for any golfer.
  • The best site I have seen for golf fitness is here, for having the most golf specific programs for all season. There are also great pre-game stretching routines.
