Last Week on the tours:

Next to the majors, this is one of my favorite times of year for watching golf on TV. You get to see the players more relaxed and interactive than in regular events. The father / son challenge provided a good look at some great players with their sons. Vijay Singh and his 13 year old son went low on Sunday, with the thirteen year old making some great shots. Hale Irwin and his son Steve however, shot 61 and captured the title in the fun affair.

Jim Furyk continued his domination of Hawaii by blowing away the field of the four major winners at the Grand Slam of Golf. The eight shot victory gave Furyk the Hawaiian slam with victories at all four of the tournaments in Hawaii. Mike Weir finished second with Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel not far behind. See the scores below.

On the European and Australasian tours, a couple of big names were victorious. In Hong Kong Padraig Harrington sqeaked out a win over Hennie Otto, and Robert Allenby won in a playoff over Craig Parry, Adam Scott, and Jarrod Moseley at the Mastercard Masters in Australia.

In Florida, Danny Ellis stormed into the lead at the PGA Tour Q-School with a 66. He leads by one shot over Mathias Gronberg going into the sixth and final round on Monday.

The other major news was Tom Watson being named player of the year on the Champion's Tour. Craig Stadler was named rookie of the year with three wins in 14 starts, including a major.

Quote/Joke of the week:

"Actually, the only time I took out a 1 iron was to kill a tarantula, and I took seven to do that."

-Jim Murray

Tip of the week:

The First Tee:

Everyone wants to get off to good start and unfortunately this can lead to tension on the first tee. Ideally you will have been able to hit some balls before you go to the first tee to help you release some energy and get the feel for hitting the ball. However, this is often not possible for the recreational golfer. At the very least take several vigorous swings after doing some warm up and stretching. Then after the vigorous swings let yourself relax for a couple of minutes to let the adrenalin die off. For more first tee warm-up tips click here.

The key once you are ready to get going is to make sure that you build confidence on the first tee by hitting a good shot. Don't be afraid to be ultra conservative off the tee and use an iron if your chances of hitting a good cold shot with a wood is less than 50 %. You are much better off getting a bogie on the first hole than hitting your first shot terribly. Try to stay focussed on that first shot rather than thinking about what your round is going to be like.

Golf equipment and training aids:

  • The best golf equipment does not have to break the bank. I use clone golf clubs from Pinemeadow Golf, and I have used many name brands. Custom clubs that fit your game is the way to go. Gift certificates are a great idea for any golfer.
  • The best site I have seen for golf fitness is here, for having the most golf specific programs for all season. There are also great pre-game stretching routines. Too many people neglect the stretching and fitness components of golf and it can really affect your scores. Use every advantage you can, go to Golf Fitness now.

  • *Great new weighted swing trainer that I use.

  •   As seen on the Golf Channel and major magazines.

  •   This revolutionary program will train your mind to better golf in minutes! Justin Leonard and Roger Clemens know.
