The Week on the tours: Stephen Ames who has played great golf this year, finally broke through with his first win at the Cialis Western Open. He stayed steady while Tiger Woods, Davis Love, and Jim Furyk, among others, could not mount a final round charge. A rather high 10-under par was enough to win. Masters champion Phil Mickelson has confirmed that he will play in the 2004 Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond. Mickelson, who has moved up to fifth in the world rankings, will return to Loch Lomond for the second straight year. Defending champion Ernie Els is also scheduled to play, setting up a possible rematch from their unforgettable Masters duel. Retief Goosen won easily with a five-shot win at the Smurfit European Open. Goosen, who captured his second U.S. Open title two weeks ago at Shinnecock, got his second victory in as many starts. Meg Mallon used a hot putter on Sunday to roll to a two-stroke win at the U.S. Women's Open. Mallon fired a final-round 6-under 65, the lowest final-round score by a winner in tournament history. Mallon held off a hard charging Annika Sorenstam. Sorenstam closed with back-to-back birdies to finish a round of 4 under 67 to finish two strokes back. Jennifer
Rosales opened the round three shots ahead, but struggled through the
middle of her round. This after opening with a birdie at the first to
move four shots clear of the field.

Dr. Phil Helps Golfer A couple whose passion had waned saw a Dr. Phil and went through a number of appointments that brought little success. Suddenly at one session Dr. Phil grabs the wife and kisses her passionately. "There" Dr. Phil says to the husband, "That's what she needs every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday". "Well," replies the husband, "I can bring her in on Mondays and Wednesdays but Saturdays and Sundays are my golf days."
Increasing Distance: After going to the section on equipment and looking at your club and ball characteristics, the next thing to do is work on your flexibility. The fitness section can give you great advice on how to do this. The key to distance is in the resistance you can generate between your hips and shoulders. Larger shoulder to smaller hip turn will generate more distance. A simple way to start this is by making sure your left arm (right arm for lefties) stays straight on the way back. If your arm breaks you lose the coil effect. Only go back as far as you can with keeping the arm straight and work on your flexibility to get a bigger shoulder turn. Casting the club from the top can reduce distance amoung other things. Make sure you come slowly from the top and keep your wrist angle as long as possible, so you generate your speed at the bottom of the swing. I see too many people taking the club back really slow and then whipping it down from the top losing all their momentum before the get to the ball. Taking it back long is more important than slow. The irony of the golf swing is that you will hit it farther the slower you think you are swinging.
