Tips for Hooking and Slicing:
|
Hooking
is caused by the clubface rotating over the ball at impact.
Often this is caused by too much hand action through the ball,
and/or coming too much from the inside and flipping the club.
The more closed your stance, the greater the chance of hooking
the ball. So if you want to hook, do the above, if not try
opening your stance a bit and taking the club back more upright
than around your body. Gripping the club a little firmer can
also help to get rid of the hook.
A
slice is caused by the club glancing off the inside of the
ball. It is most often caused by gripping the club too tight,
and coming at the ball from outside to in.

To
cure a slice you want to take the club back more inside or around
your body, close your stance slightly, keep your elbows closer to
your body, and loosen up your grip.
The
great thing about learning what causes your slice and or hook is
that you can start using this knowledge to your advantage when needed.
If you are not quite there yet, use course management skills and
play to your weakness. Many people can do quite well with a moderate
slice or hook if that is your consistent tendency. By using the
right part of the tee box and aiming appropriately you can eliminate
many problems. Most people however, continue to hope for a straight
shot when the chances are it will not be. Accept your tendency until
you can fix it for good.
