Staff Review of The Falls Golf Course May 31/04
LowerScoreGolf staff rates this course #14 in British Columbia

I have to admit that mountain side golf courses are not my favorite. Having said that, I find that the Falls is one of the less gimicky, most fun mountain courses I have played. There are lots of elevation changes, but every hole looks like a golf hole.

The greens are very tough with false fronts and lots of undulation. You can run off the greens with pretty good shots if the pins are in certain places, especially on a couple of the par threes (which are pretty short though). They have slowed the greens down a little recently making them a little more fair for the average golfer, and they hold shots much better than in the past.

The Falls is a visual treat. So much so that they have to work to keep play going because of people taking pictures of the fantastic views. When I played, I got within thirty yards of a fawn with her two very young babies still with their spots. There are several holes that provide a dynamic and intimidating view from the tee.

The key to playing this course well is to judge the distances and keep your drives straight. Otherwise you can be in for a long day and lose lots of balls. The distances seem to be marked well, and they do have the GPS system in the carts.

You can compare this course to Furry Creek, Chateau Whistler, and Westwood Plateau. Though it may not have the polish of some of these higher end courses, as a golf course it stacks up well and is by far the best value.

My favorite holes are actually the last four which are on the flat at the base of the mountain. All are visually pleasing, challenging holes. The par five eleventh may be my favorite risk reward hole in the province. Hitting your tee shot from high above the fairway, longer hitters can go for the green in two, but have to clear a huge bunker onto a severely sloping front to back green. Beautiful and fun.

There is no range or practice area other than a putting green, so I strongly suggest you hit a few balls at a range on your way to the course. You start with a long par three and you want to be feeling like you have your swing somewhat grooved before setting foot on this very challenging, very enjoyable golf course.

Rating:

Visual Appeal: 4.9 out of 5

Challenge Level: 5 out of 5

Course Conditioning: 3.7 out of 5 (fairways were average, especially on the mountain)

Service: 4 out of 5

Total: 17.6 out of 20

We rank this golf course 14th in the province and 12th in western B.C.
